Golden Week Travels: Chasing the Cherry Blossoms Across Japan

In Japan, we are currently in the middle of Golden Week—a special series of national holidays that many people look forward to all year. It is a time for families to travel, explore new places, or return to their hometowns to reconnect with loved ones.

A Tale of Two Regions: Hokkaido vs. Kanto

I recently took a trip up north to Hokkaido. Even though it is spring, it was surprisingly cold there, and I noticed that the cherry blossoms (Sakura) had not yet begun to bloom.

In contrast, back home in the Kanto region, the season has already shifted. The iconic pink petals have fallen, and the trees have become hazakura—the stage where fresh green leaves begin to take over.

It is truly fascinating how much the timing of nature varies depending on where you are in Japan. This “Sakura Front” moving across the country reminds us of how diverse and beautiful our landscape is.

Do you have a favorite memory from this spring season? I would love to hear about your travels or how you celebrated the blooming flowers in your area!
